 Glenn Morris of the Denver Post wrote that Columbus Day.” is not just a celebration of the Columbus man; It is a celebration of a racist legal and political legacy — rooted in official U.S. legal and political statements — as the doctrine of discovery and manifest destiny.  Alaska, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota New Mexico, Nevada, North Carolina Oregon, South Dakota, Washington and Wisconsin do not recognize Columbus Day, although other states such as Hawaii and South Dakota mark the day with another holiday or compliance. South Dakota is the only state that recognizes Native American Day as an alternative. Hawaii recognizes Explorer`s Day. Other states, such as Maine, Nevada, Washington and Wisconsin, instead recognize Indigenous Peoples Day as an alternative holiday. Christmas Day as a holiday or federal holiday is sometimes criticized by various sources, usually because of its links to the Christian religion. In December 1999, the Western Division of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, in Ganulin v. The United States, rejected the allegation that the federal status of Christmas Day violated the regulation clause of the Constitution, ruling that “the Christmas holidays have been largely secularized” and that “by granting a paid Vacation Day at Christmas to federal employees, the government no longer does, as does the cultural significance of the holiday.”   Inauguration day, January 20, 2017, falls on a Friday. An employee who works in the District of Columbia, Montgomery or Prince George`s County in Maryland, Arlington or Fairfax County in Virginia or in the cities of Alexandria or Fairfax in Virginia and who does not regularly work overtime on inauguration day is entitled to a holiday. There is no replacement leave for employees who will not work regularly on Inauguration Day./p> New Year`s Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Veterans Day and Christmas Day are celebrated on the same calendar date each year, regardless of the day of the week.
When a holiday falls on a Saturday, federal employees who work monday through Friday watch the holiday of the previous Friday. Federal employees who work on Saturdays look at the holiday on Saturday and for them, Friday is a regular business day. Holidays that fall on a Sunday are observed by federal employees on the following Monday. Other public holidays always fall on a certain day of the week.  The U.S. government establishes and requires certain organizations to close their doors on federal holidays. In addition to federal holidays, each state and local jurisdiction can provide its own legal calendar. Thanksgiving Day is the fourth Thursday in November each year. It was originally a thanksgiving and became a public holiday. Juneteenth is also called Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day and Emancipation Day.
The National Museum of African American History and Culture describes Juneteenth as “the second day of our country`s independence.” The name of the festival comes from the combination of June and the nineteenth.
